It's time for another edition of "stating useless things that you knew already!"

Today's post will be about a rough guide to the stages of DotA, inspired by nothing, for no purpose, and well, most of which you should already know.

As useless as classification is, it does make things clearer. I realise that I've been using the word "conventional" to describe strategies in DotA without actually a clear definition of what exactly comprises a "conventional" strategy.

But that's merely a derivative, not the main focus, of today's topic.

In fact I'm pretty bad at giving topic names, so I'll just go on with the discussion without any hint or focus as to what I'm about to discuss.

So anyway, a DotA game can be divided into 3 stages. The early-game, the mid-game, and the late-game. DUH. Actually any game can be divided into any number of stages. One could always make up the one-over-pi-game, the super-duper-late-game, or the pre-pre-pre-game. For my purposes today, the division stated will be more useful though.

Another obvious point here. Early-game comes before mid-game which comes before late-game. However, it would be rather boring and even more vague to explain the "early-game" as simply "the beginning of the game". Rather, it would be better to describe the various stages of the game by what actions and situations players will find themselves in.

To begin with, the "early-game" is a situation where players find themselves mostly in lanes. The main priority of most of the team in the "early-game" will be to gain XP and a bit of gold, thus most hero movement is easily predictable. Almost always, all 3 lanes will be filled, and players can more or less see most of what their opponents are doing, or at least predict it easily within a 10 second window.

Moving on to the "mid-game", a team's main priority here will be to farm their heroes up while preventing the opponents from farming, and also pushing towards an easier late-game, getting closer to victory (i.e. downing towers). The mid-game is more gold and gank oriented, and hero movements around the map will be very rapid. Usually though, as a result of the necessity for a late-game advantage, teams will most often see at least 1 or 2 of their heroes on the map for most of the time. Protection and backstabbing, movement around the map, will be the focus of teams.

In the "late-game", a team's priority is simply to win the game. Much like the mid-game, teams will have 1 or 2 heroes visible on the map at any time. However, since the objective is to drive towards a game win rather than to simply just dumbly continue farming up, movement around is much more predictable. Ideally, even-matched teams will at this stage of the game be focusing on facing each other 5v5. If backdooring is not a factor, then most late-game actions are much more predictable than all that movement in the mid-game. Hero positions will be very predictable, namely that they're all going to be together most of the time, unless they do a split push, in which case the heroes that you can't see are most likely behind the heroes that you can see. The late-game sees many large scale 5v5 engagements. What is unpredictable about the late-game though is that any effective and unpredictable moves by a team can give them a game win, not just a tower kill or a hero kill.

Having defined the 3 stages of the game by the situations and actions of a DotA team, there are also different set of skills prevalent in the 3 different stages of the game. "Skills" here more of being "decision-making processes" given different amounts of information. To be specific, I'm going to talk about decision making by individuals, and anything that involves more than 1 person isn't part of my scope.

It's actually pretty simple, these "skills" are simply how a person makes a decision when presented with certain amounts of information and in certain situations.

The first, which makes a player much better in the early-game phase, is what I call "laning skills". The ability to make decisions when you can see most of what happens around the map. Then there's the whole last-hitting and whatsnot part which I don't have time to cover.

The next, for lack of a better term, is what I call "gameplay skills". Gameplay of course is too generic a term, but... whatever. This involves making decisions when you can't see most or even all of the enemy team. Strangely, the most simple action also is the one decision that is the most difficult to make soundly. This skill is most of the time as simple as "which lane do I go to".

The last is what I term "engagement skills". Knowing what to do when you can see more or less everyone... but this time, when they're all together. In theory it's simple, simply being at the correct place, casting the correct spell at the correct guy at the correct time. The difficulty of this decision making skill is that a player very often has a 0.1 second window to make any decision. What this skill comprises of is usually a mixture of logical planning (to know what one should do when the engagement begins), instinct (to do what one does when the situations aren't too ideal), and desperation (what to do when the shit hits the fan, or if you want something more specific, when your Earthshaker just got hexed before the battle started).

What's the point of all this? To give myself so much more to elaborate on when I next have the time. Hurhur.

For now, I book in.

In the meantime, you can go find out where your weaknesses are at. I know for a fact that my gameplay skills are shit.

Edward Cullen.

What the girls seem to love about him.
- Has superhuman strength
- Has skin as hard as stone
- Has cold skin too
- Likes to play baseball
- Has screwed up eye colours
- Kills stuff
- Is immortal
- I guess having white skin is a turn on too

And what, in my limited understanding of the female mentality, aren't his most desirable mating traits.
- Drinks blood
- The whole 200 km/h thing. I understand that imba-fastness isn't high on the list of things desired
- The fact that Robert Pattinson looks like Ryuuk. You know, the SHINIGAMI FROM DEATH NOTE

Not that I've watched twilight.

So I have thus formed a mental picture of the most perfect mate ever, taking Edward's most desirable traits and removing all his undesirable ones.

I do have a rendition in fact. With all the detailed descriptions included... in HERE!!

*dances happily*

So let's stuff all the stuff about history and thoughts and whatever before I degenerate this blog into... an actual blog.

My recent situation has led me to seek out methods of trying to train that someone in a situation such as mine can only resort to. Up till now, I've been pretty content with sticking with a small group and finding draft matches with a small mix of people in my team. With recent developments, I have, well, no team to train with, and hey, everyone else is training with THEIR team.

Occasionally there is the urge to join up as a last in a draft match. Experience has shown that me going out to solo look for 4 teammates usually has a very disastrous outcome.

The unfortunate case is that I actually have normal sleeping hours (as your parents would most likely put it) unlike the rest of the draft matching community, and am not home on most nights or days, an unfortunate result of my current job. So for one, finding a match during my playing hours is much more time consuming.

And of course since it takes so long for a match to pop up, I don't check IRC or other channels that often for people who are finding players, which multiplies the entire effect of me being unable to find a match since I miss most opportunities from checking too late.

Doing stuff like writing this article of course, means that for 99% or more of the time that I'm on my computer, I'm not actually checking any other forms of communication with the rest of the world (99% of course being a high figure since checking any forms of communication requires so damn little time).

Next, joining 4 friends as a last generally lends you with very little power to do anything. It is not uncommon to be in a situation where I find myself completely powerless to change the game - not by my own demerit but by the whole power ditch bestowed upon someone in my position. That being said, there are a fair enough share of games where I join a bunch of decent players that make the game worthwhile.

That being said, you, my ever discerning reader, will no doubt have concluded that I have been indulging myself in the *DREADED PUBLIC GAME*.

On Garena, I find myself actually in a surprising amount of pretty good pubs with a lot of players worth their salt. That being said, I've held a pretty low impression of the "public game", so what I term a "surprising amount" is somewhere close to around 5% of games. There are a lot of games where a team of competent players will decide to gank up against a team of, well, not so competent players (a judgment passed simply because of statistics). Those sometimes end up as challenges, but often end up as a situation like one described above. A very frustrating sequence of events that you have almost absolutely no control over.

Almost all the cases stated though, are minorities. Not to the extent of being exceptions (though I would consider some games to be exceptional considering the statistical probabilities), but not games that I would include in a sweeping description of the general "public game".

There are some things that can be learnt about public games, though there is nothing I can think of that can be learnt FROM public games that cannot be learnt in a proper good match. It is an amazing thing that where the general "public game" is the most common mode of play for DotA, it defies most of what the game is about. Indeed, DotA is one game where, and increasingly so nowadays, coordination and teamwork is absolutely essential. Yet majority of what happens in "public games" has at least one team lacking in any basic team work or coordination, and some things are impossible to learn without practicing.

Having read thus far into my exposition, you might be disappointed to know that there is no magnificent revelation about the DotA pub in this post. With all the above being flashed out, the next bit is about a specific way to make your DotA pub much more enjoyable.

Tada. The key is to play with ONE friend. Suddenly everything is much easier. If by any chance both of you join a random pub, chances are that by bringing in one friend who is a competent player, you are statistically more likely to win. The challenge is what happens when you fight a bigger group of friends on the other side (mostly on the hosting side... perhaps it might be an unjustified generalisation, but friends on the scourge side usually end up just leaving together), or in the surprisingly likely event where your teammates are utterly atrocious. Perhaps it only is a surprisingly likely event because most of the games where mine teammates aren't utterly atrocious end up being short and not very memorable games, but this is where the fun begins.

Because suddenly, when you have just one good friend amongst all the blazing noobness, the game becomes CHALLENGING as opposed to FRUSTRATING.

The impact dealt to the game by one single good player is nothing compared to that brought about by a pair. This statement I have yet to put into proper explanation, but is one of those statements that simply feel right, and at least seem empirically correct for my case.

I would love to discuss more about this, but this post is already dragging too long for me to write down all the things I love to write down about. Perhaps I'll explore this further, with more specific case studies, but like I said, I never actually follow up any of my points do I?

Anyway, I was playing a game today, and all of a sudden I experienced a fresh feeling I have yet to encounter in the past few months. Forgive the vague analogy, but it was as if I was myopic and suddenly got glasses. Basically, I started consciously thinking about almost everything that was currently happening in the game. It was almost a heightened sense of map awareness, coupled with a clear idea of what to do against a visible enemy.

Makes one wonder if it's possible to recreate such a sense all the time. It feels a bit lousy sometimes to simply play by instinct and occasionally just have everything fall in your way.

Oh, of course, let's start with these two links:
Here and here.

Brought to my attention by DotaSG, and naturally has aroused an interest in me since a large portion of this site has been devoted to archiving Zenith history.

I think XtC does a pretty damn good job themselves of archiving their own history, sans the personal opinions, which might be a good or bad thing. Everything else I've done not under Zenith has roughly remained forgettable, and certain parts regrettable. I look forward to another time when I can personally once again at least roughly report (with of course, limited insights) on the happenings of a team Zenith, but I doubt that'll be early enough to be a Christmas present.

The two articles actually do pretty damn good reporting, something you won't find here. I do have a habit of inserting a little bit of my incessant whining in about everything I write.

Non incessant whining bits of information can be found here.

Oh dear. When was the last time anyone updated that.

For someone who hasn't actually been in any of these teams, Underminer does a bloody good job at tracking their history, and writes a succinct summary of it better than I ever can - plus it's actually focused with "flow", a concept alien to me. I guess you can really see in it the devotion one man has put towards the game.

Irrelevant random point which I feel like saying right now since I never got the chance to say it. Did you know that for most of the last 2 years (well, I can't speak for most of this year, but I'll assume nothing has changed), the generally considered 'best' player internally within the whole Micronology gang was Bouncy?

More on that some other day. But I never actually do elaborate on any points I push forward do I?

I could add on to what is written in the two articles by Underminer, but I'm pretty satisfied with what's written. From what I can tell, it's a complete enough story. Perhaps supplemented with salutary comments to NutZ and, I believe very importantly, QueeN. Maybe I can fill in on what I need to fill in on.

It can be shocking how much public opinion can differ from internal opinion in a team. A point illustrated 3 paragraphs up should show that. Of course, back when I was actually playing for Zenith (oh, another case of "back when..."), I could pretty much post here and control public opinion :D.

Zenith 2008 (i.e. the period when I wasn't playing and wasn't involved in any decision making for the team), whether I support their decisions or not, was at least rather stringent in their selection of a 5th player (the criteria however, I believe, was flawed). It thus stands that they had a pretty damn good reason to keep QueeN in their team no matter how many failures they had.

While Musica was no doubt a great choice for ESWC, I do believe that the team would have been equally or more willing to let QueeN take his place, but well, they did sort of agree with Musica that he would play ESWC for them.

There is a fair amount of respect to be paid to someone who spends much of his life developing a team, has his team suddenly leave him, after which he joins them back, wins almost nothing, and have his team suddenly leave him again. Not to say the least about his teammates.

But really, I'm not at liberty to reveal anymore, since I don't actually know any more. Nevertheless, about every member who has joined Zenith has had a story to tell, that has yet to be heard.

Except Lem. Who joined for like... 3 days. Or something.

And where did Adverska go?

Except for me, since I tell everyone all my stories. Ha ha ha. Or are there a few I keep to myself and try to forget?

Back to the present now, SMM.

As a whole, the event is pretty cool. It's right in the middle of a rather big shopping plaza, so food and whatever you need is pretty abundant. Plus plus, free drinks. Awesome that is.

The story as it goes is like this. I went down to SMM as a commentator, not as a player. More on that later (REALLY!!), but as a commentator this is probably the first time I've experienced true fatigue.

First of all, THANK GOODNESS FOR THE FREE DRINKS.

I think I did about 15+ games back to back in the 3 day period, some solo. As a result, slips in hero names, or whatever one can slip up in, happen. Somehow I said DotA had 6 lanes and I ended up calling wrong hero names and missing kills. Fortunately there is no recording of any sort to preserve all my mistakes for time immemorial.

Then I headed back to Singapore, and got a sore throat only the day after. Strangeness.

Another irrelevant point. Is it just me or does my team treat me like shit every time I start to actually care about it?

Well, I don't tend to write about XtC matters here, but rather my own personal take on things. The lineup for SMM however, as one should have been able to see, was Tofu, ice, gGg, xy, and Alan (the letter 'A' is capitalized for no good reason). This was in fact a lineup that only was finalized to go to SMM one month or so before the actual competition.

As a side note, it's rather sickening when "my team" gets thrashed 2-0 by Impreza in some ADC replacement game... and I find out about it through the Dota-Allstars forums.

Ah, the memoirs of someone who has been slowly phased out. Of course, the final lineup, as Tofu explained from the start, was to have a team which he could hardcore train with. NSFs of course, are not in that category. His philosophy of course, is no doubt sound. Hardcore training brought Zenith to ESWC victory, and this team managed to secure a sound 2nd position in SMM amidst VERY DAMN INTENSE competition. Well, I had hoped that there was room for a 6th, but political correctness and politeness didn't outweigh $$$$$$$.

Well, actually I didn't know I wasn't playing until about 2 weeks before. Then I got offered to commentate. O well. I did need a vacation from Singapore.

And of course, making the decision to not let LuX play while he's away in Australia and not contactable for more than a month isn't very nice, but to be frank was rather necessary to achieve this result, since it is rather risky to hinge on a player that hasn't played for such a long time.

Stuck in a position where such justified injustices are handed down, there is nothing that can be done but wish them all the best. Silence of course, is disposed from the majority which it best benefits.

But now that it's over, damn.

I could do a hell lot of whining here, but overall it leads to me ending up right now with no more direction of where to go.

The good thing is that when someone goes hardcore training and picks up a lot of things along the way (without you), suddenly the game is so much more fun because I know of what I need to acquire and can feel once again, IMPROVEMENT!

Because as much as I always love picking the right hero for the right situation to use, I think it's about time I learn to use the wrong hero to put him in the right situation. After all, when the Athlete runs a race, he runs with no load, but perhaps it would be better for him to train with load on him.

And once again, when there is a team I thought I could settle in once again (or was it the same team I had already settled in?), a chain of decisions and events partially correlated with one fat boy leaves me left to pick up the pieces.

Off we go into the wild blue yonder,
Climbing high into the sun;
Here they come zooming to meet our thunder,
At 'em boys, Give 'er the gun! (Give 'er the gun now!)
Down we dive, spouting our flame from under,
Off with one heckuva roar!
We live in fame or go down in flame.
Hey! Nothing'll stop the Asterisk Force!

Good morning Singapore! Et cetera.

I believe this sort of marks the end of 3 years of what I like to call Zenith. Well, what started out as mVp.

Well, fuck sentimentality.

Experiences gained through these past 3 years are actually book-writing worthy. Events have happened which I know precisely what and why to feel about, and then some of which I don't exactly know why I have certain reactions to, or perhaps risk a reaction that would best be left not provoked into being.

I'm annoyed with a lot of things I don't say. I'm pretty sure many of you are annoyed at roughly similar things and don't say them either, and I'm also pretty sure some of you are annoyed at those who express their annoyance. So in light of all the recent more controversial items I have written, this could be a nice finale.

Often one blogs when one lacks a personal vent about a personal problem. This rant involves general community issues that I have personal grievances about, for a reason that I chose not to express at any other time and will probably never express in public again because it simply isn't very logical, and definitely not very nice. Most of what is written below can be instinctively responded with a "go fuck yourself" if it was an article written with equal weight on public input (i.e. a forum). Luckily, when it comes to this blog, MY VOICE IS LARGER!

Although a comment could be rather long.

And any other members of the blog can post equally heavily weighted responses.

Boo.

So, good morning Singapore.

Apparently The New Paper can squeeze in one entire week's worth of articles simply about Singaporeans not returning their trays. I call this "incessant ethical whining". Then we have people perpetually complaining about the Singaporean online community being too immature, or generally retarded in nature. Same thing.

The problem having grievances with a general community is that the only way to do anything about it is to whine. Whining being a very appropriate term here since one basically complains about a problem with absolutely no productive input nor constructive point. So yes, I'm whining about people who whine. Specifically on all those complains about "EVERYWHERE I GO PEOPLE ARE BM!!" or "SG Pubs suck so many leavers" etc. Hypocritical as it may seem, just because I'm whining about whining doesn't mean that I'm telling people not to whine. Heck, whining here seems the only option when dealing with some issues, but isn't all that whining worth whining about?

Next up, you are not the God of DotA. More often than not, if someone disagrees with you, he ACTUALLY THINKS HE IS RIGHT. *GASP*.

Now, that's a concept that most people would love to subscribe to, but DON'T!

The greatest thing about DotA is that you can always think you are God simply because when anything goes wrong you can blame your teammates. Most of the time. Heck, most of the time you don't even know what the hell went wrong.

You can never be better than the God of DotA, because the beauty of it is that you're only as good as you think you are. Or as good as others think you are, but you can always ignore that.

Feedback is not entertained by God. Ladies and gentlemen, the proper human response to a tip such as "I think you should have stopped farming and camped here" is not "fuck you cheebye". The stubborn one might go "NO!". The righteous paladin might defend his actions. The cooperative one might just reflect upon it.

And on the other hand, never underestimate the power of a God of DotA in simply telling you that you are wrong, dumb, ugly, and have absolutely no power over him whatsoever. Do not be deceived by that ever-so-sarcastic "Oh you are right I am wrong I suck you own yes yes ok ok".

Sometimes, time does not permit for feedback and discussion, but mere mortals do not deserve to face the wrath of a God of DotA for every sacrilegious statement.

At this point I would like to dedicate a short segment to the people who believe that they represent public opinion about themselves. And as an extension, some people even tell you that what you are feeling is bullshit. Not the "Oh, it's pretty damn wrong to feel good when your teacher dies" people. More of the "You're NOT FEELING GOOD. You say you're feeling good? YOU'RE WRONG. WRONG!" Kind.

As a general rule, it's quite difficult to be wrong when it comes to self-expression. One can only be horrendously vague, irrelevant, whiny, imprecise, and well, imprecise. It's pretty hard to be detectably wrong.

Bleh.

Good morning Singapore.

The list goes on and on, but perhaps this has been a healthy enough does of whine-treatment.

Oh, dare I whine about GIRL GAMERS?

Now that's something I'll probably not post on public domain...

But oh, there are enough whiny things to whine about from all the people one meets both online and offline in the DotA community. Enough to fill mostly the same space that has been filled in this entry. Hopefully I have something more substantial to write about, but since I play so little DotA and think about all the happenings so much, articles of this nature are generally bound to be more common.

the Argument:
fyi, garena sg rooms 3 and 4 have a strict banning system.
unintentional leaving = 7 days
intentional leaving = 30 days
and there are other banning time frames for repeated offenders.
nick, aka aod-jehovah was the one who introduced me to these rules for the rooms, and i so far, have only banned those who left in my games, or leavers in games that other admins are in.
i do not think i'm unreasonable as an admin, i have unbanned a couple of people who came back with their reasons.
bottom line is, i'm not being paid to do this. i gain nothing from this, other than a sense of satisfaction that i'm cleaning out the leavers from the rooms, and making the community a better place to game.
i don't need anyone's respect, in fact, being an admin is a dirty job, and you're likely to get beaten up/sworn at/bm-ed more frequently then anyone else in the room.
i'd like to think, that the leaver situation in room 3 and 4 has improved dramatically. there are actually entire games that i can sit through, which are 5v5 to the end.
and that, makes me, and my fellow room 3 and 4-ers HAPPY.

It feels like a pretty uneventful weekend, and then I realise that IT'S NOT A WEEKEND AT ALL!!

Surprise surprise. I missed blogging in the entire month of September.

And I have forgotten totally what WGT was like. Hurhur.

I had too much to write here, mostly social issues though, so I'll book in first, and hopefully I won't have enough time on the weekend to write again. Hurhur.

Like you, they're gamers.
And they need
your help.
Not too long ago, Zenith did Singapore proud by clinching the ESWC title at San Jose. Now, because of a lack of sponsorship, a handful of talented Singaporean gamers who have every chance at winning a medal were nearly unable to fly to Cologne, Germany for prestigious WCG 2008.

Can you imagine how you would feel, if you were in their shoes?

The time has come for gamers to support each other. It can be in small denominations of $10, $20, $50. Every effort will count to the pooling of the $4000.

Those who wish to pledge a donation may email donation@scoga.org or visit http://scoga.org/sgchamps/ (if you have PayPal).

Together, we can make things happen.
I have pledged $100. Will you step up to it?

Following the overwhelming support for the first evo [fun] tournament, the organisers have decided to run a second evo [fun] competition, taking into consideration the feedback from teams and players after the first.

Some feedback from teams:

"It isn't fair to have ranked players because some of them are just too pro."
Thus, this second tournament will allow 0 ranked players.
We regret to inform that the top 3 teams from the previous evo tournament will also be barred from this tournament. They are the evo staff team, Asterisk* and TanGo.

"I don't really need so many free hours, but would like some other freebies"
This second tournament will have reduced free hours but feature some "special themed awards". These winners will win selected Razer swag. Look out for it!

there's lots of things that i appreciate about ant, and a couple of things that i dont.
among the things i appreciate about him are that he's got an opinion, and he speaks his mind. you'll always know exactly where he stands. the best part about this is, he doesnt do it in a bad mannered stfu noob kinda way. ok... maybe sometimes he does... but generally, he'll deliver his message in such a way that it hurts like hell cos its so to the point, and factual. but i just can't bring myself to hate him. i like honest people. ^^
of course you're free to disagree with him, as i often do. which actually is enjoyable enough, if debating is up your street.

so... yeah, i'm not sure why i'm writing this, other than i just read some comments about his bloggish post on post-eswc thoughts.

on the team front, its irritating in a way to always only have 4 girls around, and no easier solution other than to take some guys in.
but, we're not going to force it just so we can field an all girl team, regardless of the backlash.

Someone should bring a radio around with tracks to add to atmosphere while playing competitions. My plan while playing SF is to play the Temeka soundtrack (youtube it if you don't know what I'm talking about) every time I enter a battle and have all my enemies freeze in laughter at the epic fail that I unleash.

30 minutes to write and I still have dinner to take. But lest I forget...

Today Shawn asks me when I'm going to move on.

i.e. quit DotA.

See, 1 year ago, I would have thought that I wouldn't exactly be in any position by this time to actually get anywhere near top 4 in any competition in DotA. Then again, my policy when it comes to planning has always been to plan 3 months in advance and never ever more, because anything you plan more than 3 months into the future, in all likelihood, will never happen.

Upon conscription I had almost wanted to join with a bunch of people that I never knew before - Isaac, some ex-GG[U] people, etc. and I think the name Purify- came up too. The whole purpose was to just be part of some team where I wouldn't be pressured and could just play for fun. At that point in time I had no idea how much time I could dedicate to playing and was pretty happy that I could join a team with basically no promised commitment at all. For that much and for letting me go after I was almost forming a team, I do give Isaac some respect.

Then, in my own words, an offer came by that was too good to resist. "Ice, LuX, NutZ, MusiCa, Ant". It didn't really worked out as planned, with me still being unable to offer enough time to train. Cue many other complications, and I'm where I am now.

I did plan to move on, really, but things don't work out as planned, and I find that spending weekends on DotA actually isn't such a bad thing, since I'm lucky enough to have around 48 hours out on my weekends. I still have university applications, driving, SATs to do though... so who knows when I'll decide it's time to stop being a teenager and move on...

I mean, with many of my classmates etc. (which I still meet on weekends) having barely 24 hours a bookout, I do have to spend some time with something mildly productive :D. And DotA is productive when you're somewhere nearer to the top... or when you're having fun :D

And of course, if your classmates play DotA, you get the added benefit of joining Summerfury with them now :D

Oh, HAPPY BIRTHDAY NUTZ.

Wow. It's very blog-ish now. I think I'll move back to talking about DotA instead of talking about myself after this. This week just has been one that I feel good to unleash any unsettled emotions I have onto this blog.

I'm more or less detached from Zenith anyway so why am I using this site T_T... must be for the audience!

Friday, August 29, 2008

As much as I would like to blog about all my experiences in the previous month, it's probably no longer relevant. I've been feeling a mixture of happy and surprised this week. For me, my feelings about the current events at ESWC date back to up to two years ago. It goes deep into the archives of this blog.

I'll state flat up that I did not expect Zenith to win ESWC. Not because I feel the other teams are good, but because frankly Zenith has not been performing, and didn't exactly improve much. Joining them the last few days before they headed out to ESWC, there really wasn't much change in their playing, not much improvement either, except that they were more or less broken and willing to try anything - including, wisely, giving Tofu more say.

But all this I can't judge, since I'm now an external observer.

Perhaps the western teams were slightly too overrated. Perhaps a gap evolved between the Asian and western teams when they decided not to mix around with each other too much anymore, and with teams like EHOME stepping up their game, the rest of Asia was forced to do so as well. Perhaps Zenith simply went in with nothing to lose, having suffered the worst streak of defeats that any team named "Zenith" has EVER encountered, and with that attitude managed to give their all and win.

Or probably, perhaps, it was that the strategical advantage was reversed.

I have worked all my life for this day and I have met with disappointment after disappointment. IHCS and MYM's and all the international tournaments... well, refer to past entries 1 year back and earlier. I would like to think that sending Zenith to ASUS and Dreamhack did something in contributing to bringing an international DotA LAN tournament closer, but it's something I think I say just to console myself. There was a big problem in the Zenith European Tour, and that was strategy. It was not that we had an inferior strategy (perhaps, but not totally), but that we were not confident of what strategies to use, resulting in very very inferior quality of play due to strategies we simply couldn't pull off (and weren't theoretically pull-off-able).

And there was that thing about Magnus. More proof about being totally unprepared strategy-wise. Skill-wise, I believe that even the lousiest of us (me) with 2 months of no practice (me) could stand up to any member of the opposing team in the European tour. And really, on hindsight, it was just screwed up.

Cue more dissing about us losing in LAN. Shit happens. This more or less seals us in for more dissing and doom for the next year or so since we did lose. So at least this ESWC should break that seal that I sort of tightened over the last 2 years.

So I'm very damn happy that Zenith wins, heck, any Asian team would do, but Zenith even more so.

Of course, a lot of questions pop up, like 'would this happen if I was there?' and 'COULD CONSCRIPTION COME AT A WORSE TIME?'.

I would say that Asia is on strategically higher ground right now.

Would I dare say what is in for Zenith? Chances are they'll ride on morale and do well, or perhaps they'll get even cockier and screw up even more. I told Wei Ming (gamesync) after Zenith lost to |sc that Zenith is a team that, despite the change in lineup, rides on a wave of ups and downs, and simply were riding on a down period. ESWC might be a break in their 'down' cycle, or might be the start of their 'up' wave. Either way, I dare to say that the current team will lose their 'up' cycle soon. The strategical advantage doesn't hold for very long.

I'll be honest here, when I say that there are a lot of things that I DON'T respect the current Zenith team for. Don't get me wrong, winning ESWC doesn't gain much in the respect field.

But it does make me very happy.

And in a way, it justifies the two years of work I've put in for the name. So for that at least, I can thank the current team Zenith, for once, finally, like I used to thank the old Zenith when I could work for them and see results.
